Alex Cooper has built a career by speaking candidly about relationships, ambition and the realities of building a personal brand in the modern media landscape. As the creator and host of the wildly popular podcast Call Her Daddy, she transformed a bold and often controversial show into one of the most powerful platforms in digital media. Yet one of the most important decisions in her career happened behind the scenes when she chose to walk away from a lucrative offer from Amazon and instead sign a three year deal with Spotify worth about 60 million dollars.


Cooper recently opened up about that moment during an appearance on The Burnouts podcast, offering a rare look into the business reasoning that shaped her path. At the time, she was presented with two major offers that were financially similar. Amazon was prepared to pay roughly the same amount as Spotify, but the structure of the agreement was very different. According to Cooper, the Amazon deal would have required significantly more work and carried additional obligations that felt overwhelming for a creator who was essentially running her brand on her own.


One of the main concerns involved the volume of content she would need to produce. The Amazon agreement reportedly demanded more episodes and included elements that would place some of the content behind a paywall. Cooper explained that as a solo creator at the time, she worried about whether she could realistically deliver everything required while maintaining the quality and authenticity that had made her podcast so successful.


Spotify’s proposal, on the other hand, felt much more manageable. The agreement required her to produce fifty two episodes per year, a schedule that allowed her to focus on building the show without stretching herself too thin. The financial terms were also appealing because they offered guaranteed monthly payments without additional performance benchmarks such as download targets or audience quotas. For Cooper, the simplicity of the structure made the deal easier to understand and execute.


At the time of the negotiation Cooper was still relatively new to high stakes media contracts. She later admitted that entering such a major business arrangement felt intimidating and that she was learning the intricacies of the industry in real time. Navigating contracts, understanding agency commissions and managing partnerships with large corporations were experiences she had not previously encountered on such a scale.


The decision ultimately proved to be transformative. After signing with Spotify in 2021, Cooper solidified her position as one of the most influential voices in podcasting. The show grew rapidly in popularity and attracted a wide range of high profile guests from entertainment, politics and pop culture. The success of the podcast helped Cooper expand her influence beyond audio, eventually leading her to build the Unwell Network, a media brand focused on supporting emerging creators and developing new digital content.


Cooper has also spoken openly about mistakes she made while learning the business side of her career. Early on, she said she sometimes relied too heavily on trust rather than formal agreements, which occasionally led to misunderstandings or difficult negotiations. Those experiences taught her the importance of documenting every detail and protecting the creative work that drives her brand.


Despite the challenges, the podcast host has expressed gratitude for the support she received from her family and her husband Matt Kaplan, who helped guide her during the early years of building her media empire. Their encouragement played a role in helping her navigate rooms filled with executives and advisors while she was still figuring out the mechanics of the industry.

Looking back, the decision to choose Spotify over Amazon may seem like a simple business calculation. For Cooper, however, it represented something deeper.
